RESULTS FROM COMPLETED EVENTS 2010

THE NATIONAL DPI CHAMPIONSHIPS AT WARWICK
Gwynfa had a very good day at this National event at Warwick. 37 clubs competed made up of two clubs from every UK photographic federation plus the clubs who competed in last year's final. In short we were up against 36 of the best clubs in the country. For those of you who don't know, each club enters eight photographs for round 1 and eight different photos for round two. These are scored out of 15 (by three judges who can scored up to 5 points for each photo). After the first two rounds the top eight clubs proceed to the final (where they need a further 20 photos each) and the remainder proceed to the Plate final (another eight photos each). Gwynfa has competed twice in recent times but has never made it into the top 30. This year we did considerably better!

At the end of round 1 we were in 21st place having scored 86 points. (The best score in round 1 was 101 points). However, armed with the knowledge of what the judges had liked in round one, we were able to tailor our selection of eight photos for the second round and we scored 94 points (the best score in the round was 107 points). This gave us an aggregate score of 180 points which saw us finish overall in 15th place. In the past we have been either 32nd or 33rd. This made us
top placed Welsh club over Tenby, Dwyfor and Beaumaris/Menai Bridge.

The score of 180 wasn't enough to get us in the main final but we were only 10 points short over 16 photographs. In the Plate final the remaining 29 clubs each entered a further 8 photographs, four of them new. Our eight scored a very 99 points which was enough to see us in joint fifth place. The plate winners were Worksop with 104 points so we were just five points off the pace. Again, we were top placed of the four Welsh clubs in the plate. Our best score of the day was 'Low Flying Zap Cat' by Allan Squires which scored 13 points in round two and 14 points in the plate. Two other photos got 13 points: 'Stormy Waters' by Alan Shepherd (in the plate final) and 'Dipper on Pool' by Alec Stewart (in round two and the plate). A lot of our photos scored twelve points (see below).

After the plate the top eight clubs contested the final round with 20 photographs each. At the end Wigan 10, the winners of the last few events, were beatedn by a single point by a jubilant Smethwick Photographic Society.

Here is a full list of Gwynfa scores. (Note, we used 21 of our bank of 40 photographs. Well done to everyone who had a photo selected).

THE BARRIAN CUP
The 2010 Barrian Cup took place on Saturday 5th June 2010 and Swansea (with 94 points from a possible 100) came out on top of the thirty clubs who entered. Western Valley were second on 93 and Inn Focus, Llanelli and Thornbury were joint third on 92 points. The John Morgan trophy for the best individual landscape or seascape went to Pat Davies of Backwell for a print entitled 'Snowed In'.

Gwynfa finished in eighth place on 89 points. Our results were:
Frozen Waterfall by Chris Tidman (17 points), Lancia Stratos by Allan Squires (18), Bleak Mid-Winter by Mostyn Davies (16), Lines & Curves, Canary Wharf by Leigh Woolford (18) and Winter Jay by Alec Stewart (20). Congratulations to those who had a print selected to represent the club.

Judge, Terrick Meakin ARPS APAGB BPE3*, did an excellent job of assessing a high standard of work.

PICCADILLY ALBUMS BATTLE

Congratulations to Llanelli Camera Club who won last night's Piccadilly Albums Trophy battle at Gwynfa. Congratultions also to Jonathan Lewis (of Llnelli) who got Best Print for 'Carl' and to Graham Harris (of Llanelli) who got Best Projected Image for 'Full Speed'. Final positions were: Llanelli (143 points), Gwynfa (141), Ar Agor (138), Cwmbran (137) and Inn Focus (136). Thanks to our judge for the evening Roy Thomas APAGB Hon. Gwynfa prints were by Dave Thomas, Alan Watkins, Jeff Thomas and Margot Rowlands. Gwynfa DPIs were by Heidi Stewart, Alec Stewart, Mark Mumford and Dick Knill.

GWYNFA FINISH JOINT SECOND IN PORT TALBOT BATTLE
Gwynfa had another good night in the third running of Port Talbot’s annual battle, although Vale came first with 73 points Gwynfa were joint second with Wakefield and Swansea on 70 points. In a competition which included several successful salon entries three prints achieved a maximum 20 points including Dave Lingham’s ‘Chorus Line’.  Bob Beynon’s ‘Meadow Brown Butterfly’ scored 17, Mark Mumford’s, ‘Tracey M’s Unmade Bed’ got 16 and Alec Stewart’s ‘Intimidation’ scored 17. The other clubs involved were, Towy Valley, Merthyr Tydfil, South Yorkshire Police, Neath, Morriston, Abertawe, Tenby and the hosts Port Talbot who shared 5th place with Merthyr. The Judge was Les Loosemore. The buffet was excellent and the raffle prizes were numerous. Thanks to everyone at Port Talbot for organising the event and to Andy Baker for attending and providing this report.
BRISTOL INTERNATIONAL SALON ACCEPTANCES
Four Gwynfa photographers achieved acceptances in the 2010 Bristol International Salon of Photography. Well done!
Arthur Nash got an acceptance for "
Glowing".
Philippa Wood got an acceptance for "Fisherman, Isles of Scilly".
Alan Shepherd got an acceptance for "Lisa, 2K From Home".
Leigh Woolford got three acceptances. Cold Beacons Morning, Fog & Frost and Frosty Morn.
Leigh also got an
acceptance in the 46th Fresno International Salon (for 'Inquisitive Locals') and it is interesting to note that Leigh entered the same four photographs into both Bristol and Fresno and the one that was accepted by Fresno was rejected by Bristol and the three accepted by Bristol were all rejected by Fresno. We are sure this proves something but we aren't quite sure what.
GWYNFA'S WELSH SALON RESULTS
Well done to everyone who achieved an acceptance at the 2010 Welsh salon. We have it on good authority that the standards were very high.

Gwynfa had a total of 33 photographs accepted shared among 14 photographers. This was more than any other club.  Congratulations to Mark Mumford who had eight acceptances and scooped two of the major awards: Best Colour Projected Image and Best Creative Print. Special Congratulations also to Brian Sewell and Alan Shepherd who each got five acceptance.

Congratulations to our good friends at Bridgend & Disitrict Camera Club who were easily the most successful club this year. Among their 28 acceptances were awards for Best Colour Print, Best Creative Projected Image, Best Natural History, a Judges Choice, the Gwyn Morgan Trophy and a share of the Walter Morgan Trophy. They also had a few 'Highly Commended' and 'Commended' photographs for good measure. A fantastic achievement. Well done.

THE 2010 RGB BATTLE RESULT
The annual 3-way batttle between Rhonnda, Gwynfa and Barry was this year hosted by Rhondda. The judge was Bob Steadman AWPF from Dean Camera Club. Gwynfa (with 200 points) managed to squeak a narrow victory by two points from Barry & Rhondda who finished on the same score (198).  Our prints were by: Andy Baker, John Southcombe, Alec Stewart, Mark Mumford, Gare Were and Terry Donnelly. Our DPIs were by: Mark Mumford, Leigh Woolford, Alan Shepherd, Steve Littlewood, Dick Knill and Alec Stewart. Extra congratulations to our two 'twenties': Alec Stewart for 'Blue Tailed Damselfly' and Dick Knill for 'Baby Blues'. Thanks also to the folk at Rhondda for their usual warm welcome and yummy buffet.
GWYNFA WINS THE ACE OF CLUBS
Gwynfa led the 2010 Ace of Clubs from start to finish to win the trophy for the first time.

Fifteen clubs took part and the esteemed Judges were Tony Byram LRPS, DPAGB, AWPF; Barry Mead FRPS, EFIAP, MPAGB; and Peter Gennard MFIAP, EFIAP/p.
The competition is run on similar lines to the PAGB National Projected Image Championship at Warwick with each club allowed a bank of thirty photographs. The top eight clubs from rounds 1 and 2 (ten photographs per club) qualify for the Final (Round 3) and the remaining clubs take part in the Plate competition. The top two clubs in the Final are invited to represent the WPF at the Warwick event in July. For scoring each judge has a keypad and can score between 1 and 5 points for a photograph (so the best score that can be achieved is 15). No marks of 15 were awarded this year but there were several marks of 14, including three from Gwynfa photographers. This honour was shared between Alec Stewart and Mark Mumford. The lowest mark of the day was 7.

After round one (ten photos per club) Gwynfa led (with 112 marks) from Neath (111), Inn Focus (111), Bridgend (110) and Cardiff (109). The second
round (a further ten photos per club) saw a major fightback by 2009 winners Tenby who had finished round one on 100 points. However Gwynfa managed to cling onto the lead and the eight clubs who progressed to the final round were Gwynfa (227), Tenby (224), Neath (223), Bridgend (218), Inn Focus (216), Cardiff (216), The Vale (213) and Rhondda (213). All scores were then zeroed for the Plate and the Final.

Seven clubs contested a very high quality Plate round with each club entering a futher eight photographs from their bank of 30. Swansea, Ebbw Vale and Port Talbot finished in a three way tie for first place. Swansea were awarded the Plate because they had the highest single mark of the tied clubs.

In the 'top eight' final round no previous scores are kept. The clubs each enter 15 images from their bank of 30 and tactics come in to play based on the style of judging in the early rounds. (For example, it was not a good day for Natural History work). Also some clubs may have held back photographs so as to present the judges with new work. Others may use just their best scores from the previous rounds. Gwynfa opted to present five new photographs alongside our ten best scorers so far. This means we used 25 of our 30 available photographs.

All ended well when we achieve our first ever win in this competition (after numerous second places). The final positions were:
Gwynfa (180); Tenby (174); The Vale (171); Inn Focus (169); Bridgend (168); Cardiff (168); Neath (167) and Rhondda (166)

The individual Gwynfa Scores can be found HERE. Well done to everyone selected whether your photographs were used or not.

THE VALE 7 WAY BATTLE
Congratulations to two Gwynfa Camera Club photographers who achieved maximum scores of 20 points being awarded for their entries:- “De Schell Molen Damme” by Gary Were and “Intimidation” by Alec Stewart who also won the award for best colour print entry. The seven competing clubs were Barry, Bridgend, Gwynfa, Merthyr Tydfil, Pyle and Porthcawl, Rhondda, and The Vale, each club submitted 8 prints (four monochrome and four colour) to the competition. The judge of the entries for this years event was Tony Byram DPAGB LRPS who judged for Gwynfa twice in 2009. The overall winners were Bridgend & District Camera Club with 138 points. Gwynfa were a very close 2nd  with 137 points and Rhondda were third with 124 points. A high standard of work was enjoyed by a good crowd and Vale provided their usual warm welcome and excellent buffet.
THE MEMORIAL TROPHY
Hosted by Crai Camera Club at their very pleasant club room in the Maesycar Community Centre, Sennybridge, this annual competition for four prints by four different club members really was a battle. Judge Terrick Meakin ARPS APAGB narrowly selected THE VALE entries as the winners with three clubs tying for second place and just one point behind. These were SWANSEA, WESTERN VALLEY, (good to see them back in contention again) and INN FOCUS, a brand new club in the Federation who obviously mean to make their mark. Gwynfa finished in 7th place. Our prints were by Chris Tidman, Brian Sewell, Mark Mumford and Alec Stewart.  Photos from the top five clubbs can be seen HERE. They are of high standard and well worth a look.
THE GREAT BRITISH CUP
Gwynfa finished as top Welsh club in the GB Cup for large clubs. A score of 179 points saw us in 18th, our first time inside the top 30. Our previous finishes in this fairly new event were 30th in 2008 and 32nd in 2009. Of the other WPF clubs Swansea finished in 34th place with 173 points, Tenby were 53rd with 168 and Llanelli were 54th on 166. The top five were: Wigan 10 (232); DAPA Group (217); Smethwick (215); Arden (207) and Cambridge (202). Special mention must go to Bridgend who finished second behind Tamworth in the GB Cup for small clubs. To see the winning images click HERE. Be patient, it's a big file....
